Abstract: Therapy of experimental leprosy with dried and grated horseradish root administered perorally in a dose of 300 mg/kg mixed food and treatment with purified horseradish peroxidase increased myeloperoxidase activity of blood neutrophils, enhanced antimicrobial functions of phagocytes, decreased leukocytosis, normalized total blood cell count, and produced no adverse effects on the functional state of the liver in mice. Abstract: O presente trabalho se refere a um estudo de 42 casos de hanseniase virchowiana com comprometimento hepatico e ao efeito de uma preparaçao de ervas nativas na proteçao do figado. O figado estava aumentado em 32 casos e sensivel em 8 pacientes. Alteraçoes das funçoes hepaticas, independentes da extensao e da duraçao da doença (3 meses e 10 anos, com duraçao media de doença = 2 anos e 5 meses), foram principalmente observadas pela elevaçao unigorme das proteinas sericas (6,9 - 9,2 g por cento, media = 7,5g por cento) com hipoalbulinemia (2,0 - 4,4g por cento, media = 2,9g por cento). O nivel mais elevado de bilirrubina no soro (1,6 mg por cento) foi observado em 6 casos, evidenciado a presença de hepatite hansenica. Os altos niveis de transaminase serica (SGOT = 65,2 UI, SGPT = 78,7 UI) foram proporcionais ao comprometimento hepatico e muscular...(AU).
